Tormented Britney Spears went ballistic at her hairdresser moments before her doomed MTV Video Music Awards performance.

The troubled star, 25, lost the plot when she saw her hairdo for the show — and had to be given anti-depressants by her doctor.

Critics then branded her performance of new single Gimme More “bored” and “glazed” as she forgot dance moves and lip-synched out of time.

An MTV source told The Sun: “The scene in the dressing room before the show was one of absolute blind panic.

“She knew she hadn’t rehearsed enough and was going to mess up the whole show and possibly her career — then she saw her hairdo and it was the final straw.

“She went into a wild rage and started lashing out at everyone — including her stylist.”

Desperate lackeys at the glitzy Las Vegas Palms Casino resort fetched her doctor, who gave Brit the prescription drugs.

The source said: “Britney took enough to floor an elephant. They calmed her down — but were clearly too effective.”

But the disaster might have been avoided if Britney hadn’t reportedly objected to celebrity hair stylist and good friend of Jessica Simpson, Ken Paves, doing her hair.

The singer was apparently disappointed when the hairdresser arrived as she prefers female stylists – so he decided to leave without fixing her extensions.

"Ken made the professional decision not to do her hair for the VMAs,” his representative said.

Barnet aside, Britney had obviously been worried about how her current appearance would compare to her once famously toned body.

She even reportedly had an ab-defining spray tan before going on stage to make her body look more toned.

However, an MTV source said she picked the revealing bikini she wore for her performance herself — instead of a more flattering corset chosen for her.

But confronted with the video of her performance throughout the auditorium, Britney was apparently "inconsolable" about the way she looked.

She is said to have screamed afterwards: “Oh my God! I looked like a fat pig! I looked like a fat pig!”

Tony Barretto, a former bodyguard for Britney Spears, filed a declaration in the Britney Spears/Kevin Federline custody battle which alleges "nudity, drug use and safety issues post-rehab."

Gloria Allred, Barretto's attorney, said in a press conference today that Brit's former hired muscle was prepared to testify under oath today, but that neither the court nor Britney's attorneys chose to cross-examine him. She said his declaration went "unrefuted and unchallenged."

Barretto started working for Britney when she got out of rehab, and was fired on May 17 because, said Allred, "He did not hear her when he was asked to pick up her hat."

Barretto, himself the father of young children, came forward, Allred says, because while working for Britney, he became "very concerned" about the safety of her two boys. Allred also said that she has spoken to County Counsel for Child Protective Services about Barretto's concerns.

Perhaps Britney Spears is taking her reputation as a total mess way too literally.

The UK Sun reports that the melting pop tart got the boot from exclusive Los Angeles hotel the Chateau Marmont, for her increasingly odd behavior.

One scene in particular involved an incident at the hotel’s restaurant in which Britney smeared her face with a plate of gourmet food.

According to the Sun, disgusted guests demanded that the 25-year-old mother of two be removed from the premises now and forever.

“The diners were disgusted,” said a Sun source. “You wouldn’t expect that from a teenager in a fast-food joint.” The Spears spy added that, “Royalty have dined in this restaurant. Her behavior was totally unacceptable.”

Spears ordered to submit to random tests

Britney Spears has been ordered to undergo random drug and alcohol testing twice a week, according to court documents in her custody dispute with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

"Based on the evidence presented, the court finds that there is a habitual, frequent and continuous use of controlled substances and alcohol" by Spears, Superior Court Judge Scott M. Gordon said in court documents.

The judge also said Spears must meet for eight hours a week with a "parenting coach" who will observe and report back to the court about her parenting skills.
